Body of drowning victim recovered in Lake Cumberland

(RUSSELL SPRINGS, Ky.) -- Authorities say the body of an Indiana man who drowned in Lake Cumberland more than three months ago has been recovered.

Russell County Emergency Management Director H-M Bottom says Jeffersonville resident Roger Shane Pierce drowned in a boating accident September 8th.

Bottom says local authorities spent three weeks searching for the 37-year-old Pierce by dragging the river and using divers without any success.

Pierce's body was recovered Monday after his family called in Idaho Mountain Search And Rescue, a volunteer group that helps with victim searches all over the country.

The group used a side scan sonar, a high-tech system that produces high-resolution images underwater, to quickly locate the body.

The last fatality in the Russell County area of Lake Cumberland was a Lexington man who drowned while swimming in July 2005. His body surfaced in a cove three months later.
