LPD Exonerates Officers Involved In Abernathy Shooting

(LOUISVILLE, February 7th, 2002, 11 a.m.) -- The Louisville police investigation into the shooting death of Rodney Abernathy is over and the four officers involved have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

After an internal investigation, police chief Greg Smith says the officers followed department policy when they shot Abernathy in Chickasaw Park in June of 2000.

"Their actions were within what they were taught," Smith said. "After a Justice Department review, no charges were issued."

Abernathy, who had a history of mental problems, had hit himself with a tire iron and attacked EMS workers before police arrived.

Abernathy's family recently settled a civil lawsuit against the city for $600,000.
