How to talk to your children about violence

LOUISVILLE (WAVE) -- Beyond the family, Cezar Ivan Aguilar Cano's senseless murder may hit the smallest the hardest.

For children violence can lead to increased anxiety and sense of insecurity, but parents can help.

WAVE 3 contacted Judy Myers, R.N., Ph.D. She's an expert on healthy communication at Indiana University Southeast.

She says the number one mistake is dodging and avoiding the issue.

She advises:

  1. Let kids talk about it, regardless of age.
  2. Let kids draw about it to express feelings.
  3. Reassure children you are there to keep him/her safe.
  4. Remember kids mimic adults, so if you over react they will too.
