I-71 reopens after fatal accident near Crestwood exit

LOUISVILLE (WAVE) -- A Jefferson County man was killed and three people were hospitalized after a pickup truck apparently lost control and flipped over a guardrail in the northbound lane of Interstate 71. It happened around 5:20 p.m. Thursday at mile marker 13 between the Gene Snyder Freeway and the Crestwood exit in Oldham County.

When Oldham County Police arrived on the scene, officers found that three people had been ejected from the overturned Ford pickup and another was trapped inside the wreckage. Along with fire and EMS crews, a StatCare medical helicopter was called to the scene to transport the victims to the hospital.

The person trapped in the wreckage was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as 30-year-old Jose Romero Ramos of Jeffersontown. Police say that Ramos died from multiple injuries he sustained in the crash.

The remaining victims were flown to University Hospital. Their names and conditions have not been released. No word yet on the extent of the victim's injuries.

Police are not sure if speed was a factor in the crash. That is part of the ongoing investigation.

The accident caused northbound traffic on I-71 to back up during the evening rush hour into Jefferson County with delays reported back to the Snyder Freeway. The interstate was reopened to traffic around 7 p.m.
