Fight on TARC bus ends in murder; suspect arrested

LOUISVILLE (WAVE) -- Louisville Metro Police have arrested a suspect in a the city's latest homicide which occurred late Saturday night after two people were shot following an altercation onboard a TARC bus.

According to Officer Phil Russell, LMPD spokesperson, the shooting happened at 10:40 p.m. Saturday at 10th and Broadway, which is the location of TARC headquarters at Union Station.

Russell tells WAVE 3 that a group on the TARC bus was involved in some type of fight. As they got off the bus at 10th and Broadway, shots were fired. Since there were other passengers on the bus, the driver pulled away from the scene and drove the bus to 9th and Kentucky where he stopped and waited for police.

Both of the wounded were taken to University Hospital where one of the victims died. The other was listed in critical condition late Saturday night.

Sunday, Metro Police announced the arrest of 22 year old Apollo R. Avery in connection with the shootings. Avery is charged with murder, assault and wanton endangerment. He is being held at Louisville Metro Corrections pending arraignment.

Russell told WAVE 3 Saturday night that detectives would be looking at video from cameras on the bus. In a statement released Sunday morning, he said that Homicide detectives have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests.
