Man Commits Suicide At Wal-Mart Where Woman Was Fatally Shot

(WINCHESTER, Ky., August 8th, 2002, 12:05 p.m.) -- A man fatally shot himself Thursday morning at the same Wal-Mart store where an employee was killed by her father late last month.

Winchester police said the incident occurred after the 35-year-old man apparently set his girlfriend's mobile home on fire.

Witnesses said the man's girlfriend, who works at store, was told her home in Treehaven Mobile Home Park was on fire and she was leaving the store when the man came in, Police Chief Marty Jackson said.

Neither the man nor the woman's name was immediately released.

Wal-Mart spokesman Tom Williams from the company's Bentonville, Ark., headquarters, was traveling to Kentucky and could not immediately be reached for comment.

About 7:10 a.m. EDT the man and woman walked to the rear of the store, and at aisle 13 the man knelt on the floor, put a .45-caliber gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger, Jackson said.

Officials said the man was taken to Clark Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The store was closed Thursday morning.

On July 31, Wal-Mart employee Susan Combs, 22 was fatally shot by her father in the Winchester store's parking lot as she was leaving work. William C. Combs, 60, later killed himself on a county road.

In that incident, no one else was injured and the store remained open.
