Save money by eliminating 'vampire appliances'

Chances are about 15 bills arrive in your mailbox every month. Today's Sunrise Saves You Money tips will help you lower them.

We'll start with your electric bill. You know that flashing light on your VCR or the red light on your stereo? Those items are drawing power even when they're turned off. They're known as vampire appliances.

Don't let them suck the money out of your account anymore. Unplug them when they're off and you could save hundreds of dollars a year. Simply turning your computer off could save you $400 a year.

And check the setting on your water heater - it should not be hotter then 120 degrees. That can save you another $145 a year.

Don't forget a programmable thermostat and florescent light bulbs could reduce your energy bill by up to 25 percent.

Now to your water bill. You can save some money by spending a little up front. Replace old shower heads with new low-flow ones. Showers eat up nearly a quarter of your total water usage and low-flow shower heads only use half as much water.

Also, think about investing in a high-efficiency washer. Many of today's models could save you 10 to 15 gallons of water per load. And make sure you run your dishwasher only when it's full.

If you follow all these tips - you could save about $800 a year.
