Get a new 'do for not a lot of dough

During these tough times there are some things you just don't want to give up - like looking your best. Today's Sunrise Saves You Money tip takes us into the salon at a price anyone can afford.

The hair dressers at the Hair Design School on Chenoweth Laneworking aren't working for your cash - they're earning a grade. By the time the students start cutting, coloring, drying and styling they've put in 600 hours in the classroom.

"There's a lot of science in the cosmetology field," explains School Director Nancy Shepherd. "There's anatomy, physiology, electricity, there's chemistry - there's a lot more bookwork than people think there is. Then while they're in the classroom they practice on mannequins."

And once the students make it to the salon floor the bargain is yours!

"Right now, during the holidays we're doing $5 off any chemical service - so you can get your hair cut and colored for $28 dollars," Shepherd said.

The savings don't stop there. All services - from waxing to manicures - are offered at deep discounts. Sharon Legler has been coming to the school as a client for two years. She enjoys the extra attention and the money she saves.

"I spend somewhere between $40 and $50 and I say I'm saving over half," Legler said. "It would be over $100 if I was going to a regular shop."

The students put in 1,500 hours of work before they're beauty school graduates but if the idea still makes you a little nervous, take heart in this.

"With the instructors circling around, we generally do not have very many mistakes," Shepherd said. "And I have been in this business over 30 years and I can fix anything."

There are four Hair Design Schools across Louisville and one in Elizabethtown. You can find all their numbers in the phone book or check out their prices at: www.thehairdesignschool.com.
