LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Funding hurdles delayed progress for the Logan Street Market in Shelby Park.
Now the founder says the community space is on the way to becoming an iconic attraction in Louisville.
Mike Safai bought the warehouse on Logan Street as the headquarter for his coffee business.
“It was one of those decisions that one day I decided -- that’s what we are going to do,” Safai said.
Safai’s spontaneous plan is bringing new life to Shelby Park. The market founder was able to secure about $1 million and said the business will create up to 150 jobs.
“We will have cheese, sausage, four restaurants, a brewery, and Wiltshire, as well as coffee shops,” Safai said.
All those offerings will be available in a year-round public market that will open in the spring.
The space will hold about 30 vendors and there are only four more stalls are available for rent.
Throughout the building, other businesses are starting to fill in.
“We are really excited about the synergy that Logan Street Market is creating,” Curtis Hall, owner of Barefit Adventures, said.
Hall’s gym has been operating out of the Logan Street Market building for about three months. He also not only does business in Shelby Park, he bought a home and lives in the neighborhood.
“I've been a part of the neighborhood for a while and the Logan Street Market has been something we have needed,” Hall said.
Plans also include space for the community to gather.
“There is something about a public market,” Safai said. “It's about the smell, the people, the gathering, the excitement.”
Logan Street Market is registered as a Public Benefit Corporation. Safai said rents are kept just low enough to cover overhead cost of the building. He said the goal isn’t to make money, it’s about long-term commitment.
“I am hoping that we get a good support in here, and that this market would stay here for the next 100 years and becomes a part of the city and neighborhood,” Safai said.
Construction continues with a beverage education center soon to open.
The Logan Street Market is expected to open in May.
