LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Portland community benefits greatly from two community treasures.

Love City personifies neighbors loving neighbors – and that is exactly what Shawn and Inga Arvin have done for the past three years since they moved here and literally embraced their block with a vision to help Portland be what is always was – a thriving community.

They’ve mobilized 3,000 volunteers and hired others to help transform the area. They’ve rehabbed a community center that was boarded up for years. It is home now to a preschool, open gym and mentoring time for youth after school, and major community events throughout the year.

They opened a restaurant and plan to open a pizzeria and ice cream shop, employ others in a lawn care business and are executing plans to help others in the community start their own businesses.

Their greenhouse nearby provides fresh vegetables and they are working on helping improve health care access.

Neighborhood House represents 122 years of serving toddlers, youth and seniors. Their Excellence Academy preschool has a remarkable 100 percent rate for kindergarten readiness, nearly double the community average. They also provide educational enrichment programs to prepare students for success behind high school. They feed families, help them avoid homelessness and improve their financial stability. Their professional team positively changes lives.

We salute all who helped make our community a better place this year and hope your New Year’s resolution imagines the difference you can make in someone’s life.
