History made as City of Shively swears in first African American mayor

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Saturday, one local woman broke down a barrier in the City of Shively and created a new legacy. Beverly Chester-Burton is all about the journey.

Hundreds of people came out to watch history being made. On Saturday afternoon, Beverly Chester-Burton was sworn in as the City of Shively’s first African American mayor.

Burton’s journey started as a sharecropper’s daughter from Hopkinsville, Kentucky. However, she made a pit stop in Shively, becoming the city’s first African American mayor.

“I like to think that I am modeling the way for a lot of others that are interested in taking this journey, “ Burton said.

Burton formed that model for people, like her daughter Tiffany Burton. Tiffany said watching Saturday’s historical moment takes her back to middle school. She watched her mom walk through different political fields and create stepping stones in the community. That encouraged Tiffany to run and win a position on Shively City Council.

“I’m excited to see her vision come to life and the stuff that she wants to do in the community,” Tiffany Burton said. “I’m very excited for that, because she has good ideas.”

Burton has been dedicated to Shively since her ten years as a city council member. She stayed dedicated after she lost her first mayoral campaign in 2008. Her former UofL classmate and city council member Maria Johnson said when Burton became the first African American on the city council, she knew that was just the beginning.

“She’s making history and I think a lot of people coming up will see that this is something that they would be able to do,” Johnson said.

Whether it’s Burton’s daughter or other future leaders Burton has showed that anyone can trailblaze their own path for their journey.

The next stop for Burton includes tackling the Dixie Highway and Shively sidewalk projects and showing that Shively is a city where people should want to be.

”I’m hard working,” Burton said. “I’m dedicated, I’m here for the task, I’m here for the journey.”
