LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Police shut down the Clark Memorial Bridge (Second Street Bridge) after a vessel pushing 15 coal barges ran into the bridge Tuesday night.

Viewers told WAVE 3 News the incident happened around 8:30 p.m., more toward the Indiana side of the bridge.

The Louisville Fire Department was on scene and said Clark Memorial was shut down in both directions as a safety precaution. MetroSafe said the shutdown allowed crews to assess damage.

The KYTC confirmed that a barge struck the bridge and said the bridge would remain closed for around two hours.

This is the second incident involving a vessel or barge hitting the bridge in the past week. Last Friday, a barge struck the overlook wall in Waterfront Park.
