LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A St. Matthews police officer has passed away after a battle with cancer.

The department made the announcement about the death of Detective Jeremy Meyer, 44, on Thursday. Meyer passed away on January 2.

Detective Meyer started his career in Shepherdsville in 2004 before transferring to the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office in 2011. He made the move to SMPD the following year, according to the department.

A statement from the department praised Meyer’s can-do and volunteer attitude, adding that he was highly respected by his peers in local law enforcement.

“Not only has our Department and law enforcement community lost a valuable member but we have lost an outstanding person and family man,” the statement released by the department read.

Public visitation for Detective Meyer will be held at Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home in Shepherdsville on Sunday January 6 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. An FOP service will follow.

Meyer will be buried at Lone Hill Baptist Church following his funeral on Monday.
