They made a challenge and the public came through. LMPD officer wanted 7981 Facebook shares for a fundraiser to help Detective Deidre Mengedoht's family. And as a result of the successful fundraiser, five officers downed a Carolina Reaper pepper. It went about as well as you would expect. (Source: LMPD on Facebook)

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Detective Deidre Mengedoht was killed in a crash on Christmas Eve and one local pizza chain stepped in to help out her family. On Tuesday, 20% of proceeds from all Bearno’s restaurants was given to Mengedoht’s family. The fundraiser was so successful Bearno’s phone lines were jammed and many locations ran out of pizza ingredients.

Part of the success of Tuesday’s fundraiser is due to Detective Mengedoht’s brothers in blue.

LMPD posted on Facebook that, if the Bearno’s promotional flyer was shared 7981 times, that a few of the officers would eat a Carolina Reaper pepper on Facebook live. 7981 was the number on Detective Mengedoht’s badge.

The Carolina Reaper is the hottest pepper known, with a Scoville scale of over 1.5 million. That makes LMPD pepper spray look like a minor inconvenience.

The officers had some items on hand to help out with the heat. Milk, water, bread and even Pepto Bismol. The heat didn’t kick in immediately, but when it did, those items didn’t even make a dent in the heat.

Tears streamed down their faces. One officer was brought to his knees, And one officer excused himself as the pepper reversed its course.

In the end, the officers were very good sports about their pain, and thanked the public for making Tuesday’s Bearno’s fundraiser such a success.
