FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - As we near the one-year anniversary of the deadly shooting at Marshall County High School, lawmakers in Frankfort introduced a bill aimed at making schools safer.
Senate Bill 1 -- the School Safety and Resiliency Act -- is being called a “first step” by the sponsors.
It would increase the number of school resource officers and mental health professionals, and increase penalties for fake threats made against schools.
Under the bill, each district would be required to appoint a school safety coordinator, who would be responsible for training.
It would also create a State School Security Marshal to enforce compliance.
