LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The band Love Jones, that hails from Louisville, is appearing on Thursday night’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on WAVE 3 News.
It’s been quite a ride for the group that began in the 1990s after some friends got together to perform upbeat lounge music.
Fallon rediscovered the group that he used to follow in the 90s, after they relocated from Louisville to Los Angeles, thanks to his wife. She reached out to the band last year on Facebook and had a request.
“The favor was to record a birthday song for his birthday so she could give it to him on his birthday. After it happened, it reignited his interest in having us become part of the show,” lead guitarist and Louisville resident Todd Johnson told WAVE 3 News from the green room after the taping.
At the time, Love Jones was celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album “Here’s to the Losers.” They added some additional members to create a bigger sound, and performed at Headliners and Waterfront Wednesday, but didn’t expect Fallon to come calling.
“It’s not a top ten touring band," Johnson said. “No huge single out. Not in anything currently.”
During the rehearsal for the “The Tonight Show,” Johnson said Fallon jumped up on stage with them and performed a song.
“It was unbelievable he welcomed us the way that he did," Johnson said. “The fact he came in during our sound check and stepped up on stage and sang a song off the first record -- it was very ethereal when it happened. He really energized the day in a much grander way than we ever anticipated.”
The group plans to watch their performance together in New York. And then Friday night they have a performance at concert venue The Cutting Room.
Back in Louisville, they have a gig lined up at the Speed Ball at the Speed Museum on March 2.
The Louisville members of Love Jones include:
- Ben Daughtrey (Vocals and Percussion)
- Jonathan Palmer (Vocals)
- Barry Thomas (Bass)
- Scott Lankford (Drums)
- Chris Hawpe (Guitar and Vocals)
- Todd Johnson (Lead Guitar and Vocals)
