McDonald’s robbery leads to shooting by teenage suspect

Teen accused of shooting man blocks from McDonald's robbery

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A robbery at a McDonald’s on Dixie Highway led to a shooting a few streets over.

Police said the call came in at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, originally of a hold up with shots fired in the 8600 block of Dixie Highway, which is the location of the McDonald’s.

An eyewitness at the restaurant told WAVE 3 News the suspect, who police said is a teenage male, stole a purse from another customer. That customer took off after the suspect for a short while. Witnesses said shots were fired in the parking but no one was hit.

LMPD said the shooting happened on West Pages Lane, a short distance away from the robbery at McDonald's.

That’s when witnesses said another man got into his car to chase down the alleged thief. Neighbors on West Pages Lane told WAVE 3 News they saw the teenage suspect darting through the fields between the neighborhoods in the area.

“There’s a ditch line that cuts through and connects the street over so I’m assuming he cut through the backfield, cut through the ditch line and took off down the street,” neighbor Krista Wood explained.

But not before ditching the gun and the purse in the field behind Wood’s home, where her kids play.

“Just because there are so many kids in this neighborhood and for it to happen in our backyard - I mean, it’s scary,” Wood said.

Neighbors said the man made contact with the teenage suspect at 5000 West Pages Lane and the suspect shot him.

He ran up Hillview Drive before police officers caught up.

Witness Kenny Cowles compared it to a first-rate NFL tackle.

“First thing I’ve seen was all the police out here in front of the house,” witness Kenny Cowles said. “They were running around looking in peoples backyard and then all of a sudden I seen one cop come by and said ‘I got him,’ and snatched him and dragged him to his car.”

The juvenile was taken into custody by the Major Crimes Unit. His name has not been released.

The victim was transported to University Hospital and their injuries are not life-threatening.
