LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Kentucky State Police want to make sure those on the roads are being safe.
There will be an increased number of cars on Kentucky highways.
They’ll be enforcing Kentucky’s seat belt law, making sure everyone is wearing a seat belt, during the national Click It or Ticket Campaign, which takes place May 20 through June 2, 2019.
Of the 725 highway fatalities in Kentucky last year, over 52 percent were not wearing a seat belt.
“We also have a problem with people in pickup trucks not wearing a seatbelt,” Troy Dye with the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety said. “They think the truck will protect them. It’s my big truck. It will protect me. I don’t need to wear seatbelts. We still have that issue and we have an even higher percentage of unbelted fatalities at nightime.”
KSP troopers will also be on the lookout for non-alert and distracted drivers, and those who are driving too agressively, or may have road rage.
