TreesLouisville to plant 10,000 trees in Rubbertown

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Thousands of trees will be planted in an area of Louisville with low air quality.

TreesLouisville announced the plantings as part of the Rubbertown Corridor tree canopy enhancement plan. The project has been funded through a grant from the Michelin Corporate Foundation.

Scholar partners from the University of Kentucky presented their plans to Mayor Greg Fischer and community members Tuesday at New Birth Church.

The groups plan to plant 10,000 trees over the next three years in efforts for Rubbertown will see the benefits soon.

“I think we’ll see change very soon with just air quality and maybe health of the people," UK College of Agriculture Senior Isabella Norrid said. “Louisville health equity report was done maybe in 2017. Just looking at the maps you can tell people in this area are hit harder by diseases such as cancer and lung disease and asthma.”

TreesLouisville said Louisville loses 54,000 trees each year or the equivalent of 820 acres and that the project will help improve livability in the city.
