LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – One person is dead following a shooting inside a store in the Russell neighborhood on Thursday.

The shooting was reported in the 1800 block of West Broadway, at the 18th Street Deli and Grocery, around 11:55 a.m., MetroSafe confirmed.

Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman Dwight Mitchell said the victim was shot inside the store following an altercation between the person and an employee.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The employee is in police custody. Mitchell said no charges have been filed.

There were some people outside the grocery store when the shooting happened, Mitchell said. One man said when he heard the shots he ducked down and ran for cover.

“I ran in between the partitions up the wall to take cover … I didn’t want to become a victim,” The Rev. Alonzo Malone said. “I didn’t want to be on the news being carried away on a stretcher as well.”

The shooting happened near the new YMCA and close to a daycare. Neither were impacted, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the anonymous police tip line at (502) 574-LMPD.
