Doctors weigh-in on getting COVID following the vaccine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Doctors are giving the facts after some Americans are getting COVID-19 after getting their first dose of the vaccination.

“You cannot get COVID-19 from the vaccine,” Dr. Joseph Flynn, Chief Administrative Officer of Norton Medical Group said.

Healthcare experts said this as some people, who have received their first shots of the COVID-19 vaccines are coming down with the virus.

“If I get the vaccine today, it takes probably 10 days before my first immune response is appreciable,” Flynn said.

He added that in the cases where people are getting COVID-19 after the shot, the simple fact is that they already had the virus before the vaccination and had no symptoms.

The good news is that if you do happen to get the virus, after your first dose there is a chance that your symptoms can be minimal.

“If you look at the data that was presented to the FDA it did appear that the people who got COVID-19 even after the first immunization had lesser symptoms,” Flynn said.

With that idea in mind, now is not the time to drop your guard.

“You don’t have full effectiveness after the first dose. While you have some ability, you don’t know if that’s you that has the immunity at that point,” Flynn said.

Doctors said even after the second dose, its takes time for your body to build the correct response.
