LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A Davion Mintz three-pointer from the corner was the difference as UK beat Vanderbilt (4-4, 0-2 SEC) 77-74 on Tuesday night in Rupp Arena.
With the game tied at 74, out of a timeout, Devin Askew drove, Mintz got a screen from Jacob Toppin, and Askew found him in the corner for the triple with :48 seconds left.
“That felt amazing,” Mintz said. “Coach was drawing it up and I knew where he had placed me, I knew that it would be open and like, Devin put it right on the money and it was just bottoms. It felt amazing.”
The young Cats are starting to execute, and not coincidentally, to win.
“Coming out of a timeout, the Olivier play, the last play for Davion, execution, you know why?,” UK head coach John Calipari asked. “They’re worried about their team instead of themselves.”
Sarr led the Cats with 24 points. Dontaie Allen had 14, after his huge 23 point performance in the double overtime win at Mississippi State on Saturday. Mintz finished with 11.
Vanderbilt led 40-33 at the half. The Commodores hit 10-27 from three, but Maxwell Evans attempt just before the buzzer, bounced all over the rim before falling off.
The Cats (3-6, 2-0 SEC) visit Florida (5-2, 2-1) on Saturday at 5 p.m.
