LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A Hokies three at the buzzer bounced off the rim as UofL handed #19 Virginia Tech it’s first loss, a 73-71 Cards win on Wednesday night in the KFC Yum! Center.
Virginia Tech scored the first 11 points of the game, but UofL responded, closing the first half on a 36-20 run to lead 36-31 at the half.
The Cards built the lead to 47-33 on two David Johnson free throws with 15:38 left, but the Hokies battled back.
They got within two when Keve Aluma hit two free throws with :06 seconds left, and after Johnson connected on just one of two free throws, the Hokies had a shot at a win, but Hunter Cattoor’s three-pointer bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
Johnson and Carlik Jones led the Cards with 17 points each and Jae’Lyn Withers added 16 and a career-high 12 rebounds.
UofL improves to 8-1, 3-0 in the ACC. Virginia Tech falls to 8-2, 2-1.
The Cards game against Georgia Tech, scheduled for Saturday in the KFC Yum! Center, has been postponed after a positive COVID test in the Yellow Jackets program.
Barring a late addition, UofL’s next game will next Wednesday, January 13, at Wake Forest (3-1, 0-1). The Demon Deacons visit #22 Virginia tonight at 9 p.m.
