Three Shawnee shootings within 15 minutes leave 2 dead, 1 injured

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Three shootings minutes apart left two people dead and one injured Thursday evening in Shawnee.

The first shooting happened in the 3200 block of Larkwood Avenue, LMPD Sgt. John Bradley confirmed to WAVE 3 News. It happened just before 5:30 p.m.

Bradley said the responding officers found a man there who had been shot and killed.

The second shooting took place just a few minutes after the first one, in the 400 block of Louis Coleman Drive.

Bradley confirmed one person was injured with multiple gunshot wounds and taken to the hospital; they are expected to survive.

The third Shawnee shooting took place in the 200 block of Cecil Avenue 15 minutes later. Bradley said the man found there had been shot and was taken to UofL Hospital, where he later died.

Bradley said it’s unclear whether the three shootings are related.

Neighbors who live near each crime scene told WAVE 3 on Friday that they were still upset with the violence they witnessed the previous night.

“They need to put the guns down, the shootings need to stop, we need a change. This is 2021, we really need a change. 2020 is gone and it needs to stay gone because I have never seen anything like that before,” Odessa Riley said.

“I’m a little bit anxious I would say, these people are still out here running around in the community and to that extent we just don’t know what could happen next,” Conrad Bennet echoed.

Other neighbors expressed their hope the violence will end.

“The year just got started, today’s just Jan. 8. So, my God, we still got 11 more months to go. So, no telling what’s going to happen. Y’all going to be at a lot more houses doing a lot more interviews with different people with situations like this going on. It’s said, but the reality is this is what we face this year, this is what reality has brought us to,” Zina Willis said.

As of Thursday, four people have been killed in Louisville this year. In 2020, the city experienced a record number of homicides with 173 people killed.
