LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A man accused of killing a woman on New Year’s Day appeared in court Thursday.

Stephen Lovingood was arraigned for the murder of Jennifer Whittaker.

Whittaker, 40, died due to injuries sustained from multiple gunshot wounds in the 3400 block of Dixie Highway around 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

An arrest slip states Lovingood and another man entered Whittaker’s apartment while she was asleep in bed. He woke her up and said “Auntie, happy New Year this is for my brother,” before he shot her multiple times.

The other man who entered the home with Lovingood held another person in the home a gunpoint during the murder, according to the arrest slip. Police said the man pulled the trigger multiple times but the gun failed to fire and the two men left.

Lovingood was booked into Louisville Metro Department of Corrections and charged with murder.

On Thursday, a not guilty plea was entered on Lovingood’s behalf. He was ordered not to have contact with Whittaker’s family.

Lovingood is scheduled to appear back in court on Jan. 22.
