LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Medina Spirit will be draped in the garland of roses after winning the 147th Kentucky Derby.
Nineteen horses raced under the Twin Spires in front of a crowd of 51,838 people Saturday after King Fury scratched.
Jockey John Velazquez rode the horse to victory, one day after also winning the Kentucky Oaks aboard Malathaat.
Saturday’s trip to the winner’s circle was trainer Bob Baffert’s seventh, a Kentucky Derby record.
Mandaloun came in second for place and Hot Rod Charlie in third for show. The favorite, Essential Quality, came in fourth after a rough start out of the gate.
Baffert, whose American Pharoah and Justify each won the Triple Crown in 2015 and 2018, respectively, now looks ahead to the Preakness Stakes on May 15 with Medina Spirit, the horse that began the weekend at 15-1 odds and closed at 12-1.
