When I was a little girl, I remember watching the news every morning as my mom fixed my hair for school. This was our morning routine for several years; strawberry waffles and the morning news. Later on, an eighth-grade teacher told me, “Alyssa, you’re going to be a journalist one day.” I shrugged off her comment, not realizing the foreshadowing of that moment.

I always had a love for writing and sharing stories, but didn’t know how I could turn that into a career. I graduated from Bath County High School in 2017, not knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I went into my freshman year at Morehead State University with an undecided major. My boss at the time mentioned to me that I should try out convergent media, (broadcast journalism) and I ended up taking her advice.

During my time at MSU, I became the News Director for MSU’s campus television news program, NewsCenter, I co-hosted my own television program, Note to Self, and was even Vice President of MSU’s communication honors fraternity, Lambda Pi Eta. During my senior year, I was awarded the Amber Philpott Scholarship. This was such an honor for me because Amber was one of the anchors my mom and I tuned in to watch every morning.

I graduated from Morehead State in May of 2021. I began my job as a Multimedia Journalist at WYMT just weeks after graduation. Out of all the duties this job entails, my favorite task is sharing the stories of those in the mountains. This place and the people within it have really helped to create a home away from home for me.
