LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Volunteers spent a long day stuffing backpacks with school supplies for hundreds of needy children. Everything inside donated by individuals and companies for a program called the BackPack Angel Giveaway 2009.
"We want to give our kids from the first day and opportunity to be successful," said Keith Bertrand who is with Service for Peace, the organization sponsoring the drive.
The volunteers and donors are nicknamed the "backpack angels" because that's exactly what they are doing- saving these families.
"It's hard when they would have to go around and borrow from the other students and ask their teacher for help, ask the other children for help because we didn't have the funds to get it and we didn't know what else to do," said parent Anna Bontempo.
At this time last year Bontempo was college educated with two jobs. Today she is taking care of two children on disability without a job and after suffering a heart attack.
"This is more help than we could ever possibly imagine," said Bontempo. "I mean I didn't know what we could do. I mean they've got hand me down uniforms...we've gone to thrift stores to get uniforms and everything but with this, this is a huge help. Thank you."
Her kids are just two of the 1,000 who will be helped in Louisville and southern Indiana through this program.
