Pedestrian killed by train near state fairgrounds

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man is dead after being hit by a train Friday night on railroad tracks near the Kentucky Exposition Center.

The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on tracks near the 3200 of Preston Highway near the intersection of Audubon Parkway. Just south of the intersection, a railroad overpass crosses the street.

According to information from Louisville Metro Police, the conductor of the northbound Norfolk Southern train saw a man lying on the tracks about 1/2 mile ahead. He sounded the train's horn and applied the brakes but was not able to stop in time.

The man, described only as a white man in his 40's, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities do not know why he was on the tracks.
