LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Police and the U.S. Secret Service met with local business owners Thursday to teach them how to prevent thefts.

They discussed several different types of crimes, like thefts by employees and company identity theft. One suggestion was when hiring an employee, do an extensive background check using social networking sites, like MySpace or Facebook.

"It gives you a chance to see who they are outside of the office," said Det. Mike Glass with the LMPD Fraud Unit. "How they're conducting themselves. Are they conducting themselves in a respectable manner outside? What kind of people are they dealing with?"

Glass said that you also get to the the online comments they are posting and receiving, which gives you a better idea of how well rounded a person they are.

According to Glass, stealing from within a company is the number one cause of local businesses closing down.
