Police arrest man after he beat his grandmother

WILLIAMSBURG, KY. (AP) - Police say a southern Kentucky man is in jail for brutally beating his grandmother after she refused to let him use her car.

William Kirkland was arrested Thursday. A Williamsburg jail official said Saturday that he's being held on $75,000 bond. According to police, Kirkland used a metal pipe to beat both his grandmother and his wife because they didn't want him driving the car.

The grandmother, 68-year-old Julia Barton, received the more serious injuries but has been released from the hospital. Police said Kirkland took the car anyway and wrecked it not far from his grandmother's home. Police said alcohol was a factor in the accident.
