WASHINGTON, DC (WAVE) – The U.S. Secretary of Transportation is praising Indiana's governor for closing the Sherman Minton Bridge. In an interview with NBC News, Ray Lahood said Gov. Mitch Daniels may have saved Kentuckiana residents from possible catastrophe.

But looking forward, Lahood said the bridge problem is just another reason for Congress to pass President Obama's American Jobs act which provides funding to repair and improve the country's roads and bridges.

"The closure of the bridge between Indiana and Kentucky is a signal to America that Congress needs to pass the American Jobs Act so that roads and bridges can be safe, so that people when they traverse these roads and bridges have the sense of security that we've always had in America," said Lahood.

Lahood said we have ignored our infrastructure for years and if we continue to do so we ignore it at our own peril.
