Suspect shot during robbery by store owner

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Louisville man who tried to rob a business Friday night found the tables turned on him by the owner.

According to Dwight Mitchell, a Louisville Metro Police spokesperson, 28-year-old John R. Hatton entered M&I Smoke Shop, a discount tobacco store, at 5100 Preston Highway around 6 p.m. armed with a handgun and demanded the business money from the owner.

After giving Hatton the money, the owner and Hatton got into an altercation. The owner, whose name has not been released, ended up with the gun and shot Hatton in the leg.

Hatton was taken to University Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. He is being charged with robbery.

The business owner was not injured and police said he is not facing charges.
