LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Belmont Stakes winning jockey John Velazquez is recuperating after he was rushed from Churchill Downs this weekend.

Velazquez is recovering at Norton Audubon Hospital from a broken right collar bone after quite a spill during the ninth race Saturday. The horse, "Mr. Producer," broke down at the sixteenth pole sending the jockey tumbling.

The horse had to be euthanized. It suffered a fractured left cannon bone. Churchill Downs spokesperson Darren Rogers said Velazquez is recuperating in Louisville, for now.

"They were debating whether or not to stabilize it and see if he's going to need surgery and a plate. It sounds like he's going to need that, but the question is whether or not he's going to do it here or travel back to New York," Rogers said.

Churchill Downs monitors where injuries and accidents may or may not occur, and Rogers said there is no common thread where this incident happened.
