Elderly man indicted on 34 child sex charges
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville man faces nearly three dozen sex abuse charges, many of them against children.
John E. Smith is being held in Metro Corrections on a $10,000 cash bond. Smith, 77, turned himself in after being indicted by grand jury on charges of raping a child under 12, sexual abuse and sex charges relating to a child under 15.
Five victims have come forward. Some of the allegations happened earlier in 2012, but others occurred in 1966, more than 40 years ago.
"There's one victim where there's two counts," said Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Lisa Cartier-Giroux. "That person is the newest victim, a 6-year-old."
When investigators talked to the 6-year-old who was allegedly abused in January, they discovered men and women were also abused when they were young.
"Hence we have these other charges, with regard to these other four victims," Cartier-Giroux said. "They are now adults but the crimes against them occurred when they were children."
There is no statute of limitations on felony offenses in Kentucky, according to Cartier-Giroux.
Smith is scheduled to appear in court Monday, June 25.
