NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – Mothers and children in Kentuckiana joined a national call for breast-feeding.
Friday, mothers around the world gathered to nurse their babies at exactly 10:30 a.m. at Binford Park in New Albany, Indiana.
The event was called "The Big Latch On," the term for a woman and baby successfully nursing.
August 1 through August 7 is world National Breastfeeding month.
Consistent research shows breast milk is the healthiest start for infants, rather than formula, but it is not always easy and does not always come naturally.
Floyd County Woman, Infants and Children Kendra Henry, a breastfeeding peer counselor, said, "A lot of moms don't have the confidence to. We're trying to raise awareness so people will know where to turn."
The organizers want everyone to see breast-feeding as a normal, everyday process and are hoping to keep a support system available for all new mothers.
