CECILIA, KY (WAVE) - Police are investigating what they're calling a bizarre incident near Elizabethtown.
A man is accused of going to his mother's home and attacking her, even holding her hostage at one point.
Dwayne Curtis Haynes, 49, remains behind bars at the Hardin County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash bond after police say he did an unthinkable act to his own mother.
"It was very traumatic, but she's doing as good as can be expected in that kind of situation," said neighbor Barbara McCamish.
Neighbors are just as shocked as police by what court documents said happened in the home in rural Cecilia.
"She said he came to the house about midnight on Sunday and allegedly kicked in the door and began assaulting her and beating her with his fists," Hardin County Sheriff's Department Spokesperson Greg Lowe said.
Detectives said Haynes's rampage didn't stop there.
Police said the 74-year-old victim actually escaped from the home at one point, but Haynes quickly caught back up with her, dragging her back inside the home by her hair.
"He then held her until about 6:30 in the morning at knife point and allegedly threatened to kill her if she reported the incident," Lowe said.
Officers said he eventually took off, allowing his bruised and battered mother to call the cops.
Neighbors said they've been concerned for awhile.
"We were kind of scared. We saw him driving by a lot and we were all kind of watching and keeping everything locked up. We're glad that he did get locked up," McCamish said.
Police said the woman is recovering at home, while her son faces assault charges.
"Assaults are not all that uncommon, but to have someone assault their elderly mother is something I've not seen happen and I've been in law enforcement for 40 plus years," Lowe said.
Police have responded to the mother's home before. In early August, police said Haynes was apparently upset over the way his mom cooked him breakfast, so he threatened her.
Haynes remains behind bars and will be in court later this week.
