ROWAN COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – The mother of a firefighter said she is grateful for a phone call that gave her a chance to say goodbye to her dying son.
Lois Tackitt's son, Josh Ferguson an Elliotville firefighter, was killed Tuesday when he cut a tree that fell into another, pinning him between that tree and a bulldozer blade.
Tackitt said she answered her ringing phone despite not knowing the number, "It wasn't a number that I recognized. And normally I probably wouldn't have answered it, but something just said, you need to get that phone."
When she answered the phone she was told there had been a serious accident.
"I asked him how bad and he said, it's bad," she recalled. "I just started saying, Josh you need to hold on. Help is on the way. And you need to hang on and pray for strength."
Tackitt said over the phone her son got a chance to say he loved her, "He said, I love you mommy. And I said, I love you too son."
Ferguson died at the scene. He was just a month away from getting married.
He will be laid to rest Friday morning in a full firefighter's funeral.
