Woman arraigned on murder, DUI charges
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The woman accused of driving drunk, running over, and killing a pedestrian late Friday night on Aiken Road was in court Monday morning.
Jennifer Pierce is charged with driving under the influence and murder. Witnesses say Pierce was driving a Kia minivan erratically and swerving on the road.
Louisville Metro Police believe James Holt, 47, got out of his truck and approached Pierce in an attempt to stop her. Police say Pierce struck Holt with the vehicle and pinned him under her tires, killing him at the scene.
Her arrest slip states Pierce's blood alcohol level was 0.296, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08.
At her arraignment, bond for Pierce was set at $50,000 cash. The judge also suspended her driver's license due to a prior 2011 DUI conviction in Oldham County.
In December 2011, Pierce was driving along KY 46 near Pewee Valley with her son in the front seat. Police say she hit a telephone pole and snapped it. Her son went to Kosair Children's Hospital.
Pierce told police at the time she was on at least five different medications the anti-anxiety drug Klonopin and she drank a half glass of wine. Police say she was so intoxicated she couldn't lift her foot off the ground without falling.
As part of a plea deal, Pierce finished alcohol treatment classes in April 2012.
Holt had just moved to Louisville from southern Indiana. He was on his way home from working at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant on Chamberlain Lane.
Pierce will be back in court on July 3.
