UPS workers urged to reject new contract, voting underway

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Local Teamsters union leaders want UPS workers to reject an updated agreement, known as the Central Region Supplement.

More than 8,000 employees in the metro and southern Indiana will be affected by the outcome. However, UPS promises the public will not notice changes in the coming weeks.

In a statement, a company spokesperson Mike Mangeot said:

"Customers will still receive the service they expect. While under the contract extension, it is business as usual at UPS while the vote and negotiations continue. Any suggestions of potential disruptions during this period have no merit."

Local 89 leaders claim the health care plan is worse than the previous contract. Union spokesperson David Thornsberry said the new contract calls for a change in deductibles and reduces health benefits.

"There are provisions we don't agree with under TeamCare, which is a health benefits package," said Thornsberry. "We're not satisfied with contract language about those who already receive those benefits and others moving into the TeamCare plan."

Teamsters personnel said they also have concerns over contract language, like when a worker could be fired for an accident.

Local 89 personnel claim most of the terms they're opposing came out of negotiations on a national level.

"We're not satisfied with the regional contract supplement and we're urging our rank and file members to vote no," Thornsberry said.

Teamsters claim the UPS contract is the largest collective bargaining agreement in North America - representing 250,000 UPS employees nationwide.

Thornsberry said the contract comes down to protecting families.

"It affects their life," said Thornsberry. "It affects their children's lives. And that's why we're so passionate about doing the right thing as far as getting better benefits for these people coming in our plant."

Voting is underway and will continue until October 9.
