NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - Indiana University Southeast officials have declared an emergency after a report of an armed person on campus. The school was placed on lockdown. Students and staff members have been urged to shelter in place.
Students were sent the following message via email, text and phone calls, and it is also posted on IU Southeast's website:
"IU Southeast Emergency! There is a report of an armed individual at large on campus. If you are on campus, trust your instincts and take safe shelter in the nearest available room and lock the door, if possible. Remain in place until the police, or a campus administrator known to you, gives the "all clear." Call local or campus 911 if you have information about the suspect. If you are not on campus, stay away. Follow instructions from university officials or local authorities."
Erica Walsh, a spokesperson for IUS confirmed that the school received a report of an armed individual on campus at 2:48 p.m. Walsh said there is no indication the weapon was fired, but the school has gone on lockdown.
