Bank robbery suspects identified; 2 surviving suspects charged
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Police have identified two of three bank robbery suspects officers tracked to Cherokee Park on Thursday in the getaway car.
One of the suspects shot and killed himself. That suspect was identified by police as 21-year-old Lucas Ohnimus. He died at University of Louisville Hospital Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to officers.
Bradley Scarbrough, 19, and an unidentified 17-year-old juvenile were taken into custody. Each of them is charged with one count of first-degree robbery.
Louisville Metro police said the trio robbed the PNC Bank branch at 2901 Bardstown Road just before 5 p.m. Thursday and then drove to Cherokee Park. Police have not explained how detectives knew the Nissan Xterra Ohnimus was driving was in the park. Police caught up with the suspects near Dog Hill, where several people were sledding. That's where Ohnimus fired the shot that killed him.
Ohnimus was arrested January 29 for multiple traffic violations. The Louisville Metro Department of Corrections released his mugshot from that arrest. The LMPD Robbery Unit also believes he was caught on a surveillance camera wearing a shiny silver mask during a robbery at the PNC Bank, located at 4640 Southern Parkway, on December 26, 2013.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Public Integrity Unit was continuing to investigate Thursday's incident.
