Close call for firefighters battling restaurant fire
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Firefighters experienced a close call early Friday morning when the ceiling of a fully engulfed Mexican restaurant collapsed just as the firefighters were pulling out of the building.
About 45 firefighters from two departments battled the massive flames, which destroyed Mexico Tipico in the 6500 block of Dixie Highway. The fire started shortly before midnight Thursday night.
"About 20 minutes into the fire, the fire started getting a little rough, a lot of pressure smoke coming out," said Major Rob Williams with the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Department. "Due to safety reasons, we went ahead and evacuated [firefighters from] the structure. Once they were coming out the door, the ceiling fell in."
No one was inside the restaurant when the fire started, and no injuries were reported.
Williams said most of the flames were in the front of the restaurant when firefighters from both PRP and Lake Dreamland arrived.
Arson investigators were on the scene Friday morning investigating the cause of the fire. Williams said it was obvious construction work had been going on inside the restaurant.
