LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The long arm of the law has reaching across the country and four decades to charge a man with murder.

On Sept. 16, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted a man for a death that happened in 1971.

Michael Sanders was just 20 months old when he died on December 15, 1971. Prosecutors say his death was ruled a homicide at the time, but there wasn't enough evidence to arrest anyone, until recently.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Diane Arnold says a Louisville Metro Police Department detective went back and looked at the case. He was able to track down enough evidence to charge Lawrence Roger Beck, now 65.

Arnold said the detective worked, "to track down many of the witnesses, to find as much new information as she could, and really to get a doctor to look at how the child died and if the injuries were consistent with what the suspect had said."

Prosecutors say Beck, who would have been 22 at the time of the baby's death, was Michael's step-father.

Arnold says Beck was arrested Sept. 16 in Los Angeles.
