LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - For the first time ever you can adopt a dog or cat from two Louisville animal shelters for free.

The "Empty The Shelter" drive will take place Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Kentucky Humane Society's main campus in south Louisville at 241 Steedly Drive. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. you can adopt any dog or cat - no exclusions - at no charge.

Louisville Metro Animal Services joined the effort and are also offering free adoptions Saturday at the Animal House Adoption Center, 3516 Newburg Road.

This summer alone KHS says they have taken in nearly 2,000 animals.

People hoping to adopt a pet must have an application approved. Adopters are responsible for pet licensing fees.
