LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - She's carried people, animals and whiskey barrels in her lifetime and this week is throwing herself a big 100th birthday bash - the Centennial Festival of Riverboats - at Waterfront Park. The Belle of Louisville has been her name for the past 51 years and she will be cruising with her diesel-powered younger sister and four other riverboats this week.

She was bought for $34,000 and was considered a waste of money, but is worth millions now. The Belle is the country's oldest authentic river steamboat and believed to be the second oldest in the world. She's been preserved well and is one of our areas treasures.

Like many of us, she's reinvented herself through the years to stay relevant, and relies now on the financial support of others. She's gotten contributions from businesses, foundations and government agencies to share her birthday with all of us, and will even participate in a parade Saturday.

Special cheers to presenting sponsor LG&E, the Louisville Water Company for offering pure tap water stations all over Waterfront Park during the Festival, and the City of Jeffersonville for reviving its Steamboat Days Festival this week.

Now is certainly a good time to take a cruise along the river and participate in the celebration.
