LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - An industrial accident killed a young mother while she was operating a forklift on Tuesday.

The accident happened around 5:30 a.m. at AAA Cooper Transportation in the 3900 block of Bishop Lane. Louisville Metro Police said the worker, identified as Tomi Leigh Batts, 22, of Louisville, was operating the forklift when it malfunctioned.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, Batts died of blunt force injuries to the head and neck.

Employees told WAVE 3 News Batts had worked at the business for two weeks and had a child under 1 year old.

Scott Bowers, Director of Human Resources and Risk Management for AAA Cooper Transportation, released this statement:

"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of our employee and employees affected by this accident. At this time, we are still investigating the facts of this accident. We are cooperating with investigators and will continue to do so throughout their investigation."

Daniel Lowry of the Kentucky Labor Cabinet says this is the second forklift operator to die in an accident this year in Kentucky. In May, a forklift operator was struck by a falling load in Christian County.

On average, three people die from work-related forklift accidents in Kentucky each year.
