FLORENCE, KY (WAVE) - A Boone County father says his young son, waiting to be treated for the flu, died in his arms at the hospital as the family begged for help.

WLEX-TV, the NBC affiliate in Lexington, reported that 6-year-old Mikey Guallpa died at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence on Dec. 20. His father, Jose Guallpa, said he was told to wait his turn. "Wait for my turn to see my son die?" he asked in an interview with the station.

Guallpa said his son had been to the hospital for the flu a few days earlier, but he rushed Mikey back when he started shaking and vomiting. Mikey's parents say they waited 20 minutes until he passed out. They screamed for help, but by then, it was too late. Mikey was pronounced dead a short time later.

"They should have got to him earlier," Zara Jimbo, Mikey's mother, said. "When we were begging."

A St. Elizabeth Hospital spokesman released a statement reading in part:

"We are unable to comment or release any specific information. As an organization, St. Elizabeth takes protecting the privacy of our patients' protected information very seriously."
