LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man is being formally charged with shooting and killing another man while the two drove along in separate vehicles on Interstate 71.

After the shooting was reported around 9 a.m., traffic came to a halt and police began to search for the shooter.

A few hours later, police sources said they found the white Ford work van they'd been looking for. A mass of officers caught up with the van on the exit ramp from Interstate 64 to Blankenbaker Parkway just after noon Wednesday.

That's where they took a suspect into custody - Christopher L. McCullum, 43, of Louisville. Investigators said the shooting appears to be a completely random act of road rage, that there is no connection between McCullum and his alleged victim.

Witnesses said the driver was dressed in coveralls and was calmly chatting with officers after they got him out of the van. He was taken away in the back of a police cruiser.

The van itself sat on the ramp for close to 90 minutes, time enough for a police technician to get there and start going over it to check for evidence.

McCullum was booked into Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. He is expected to be arraigned on Thursday morning.
