Police: Nanny and child held at gunpoint during home invasion

LA GRANGE, KY (WAVE) - Police in Oldham County are searching for a suspect who pretended to be a delivery man and held a nanny and a 3-year-old child at gunpoint during a home invasion.

It happened Thursday in the 900 block of Woodland Ridge Circle.

The nanny says the suspect had a package in hand, but needed her to sign for it and he didn't have a pen. What happened next, she never could have never predicted and now fears he will come back.

Still shaken, she asked that her identity be withheld.

"I'm just thankful that they're OK," she said. "These babies are like my world."

For years, she has watched two children in their parents' La Grange home, a normally quiet neighborhood.

"It's very scary," said neighbor Pat Tallman. "I had a little trouble getting to sleep last night."

Wednesday morning, the nanny was home with the youngest, a 3-year-old boy, when there was a knock at the door.

"He was carrying a box, had a clipboard with him, and he mentioned the homeowner's name," she said. "We get deliveries a lot, so it didn't seem out of the ordinary."

She says the suspect, a white man about 6'3" with short buzzed hair was wearing a dark brown jacket and khaki cargo shorts.

"I've never seen him before," she said.

She says he asked her to sign for the package, but didn't have a pen.

"I came back through and there he was standing with the gun," she said.

"The suspect was armed with what is described as a black semi-automatic handgun, an unknown bullet make or caliber of it. No shots were fired," La Grange Police Officer Joe Whitefield said.

Police say that's when the nanny and child were forced into a bathroom with the suspect for about 30 minutes. The victim says she heard at least one other person rummaging through the house before they left.

"It's pathetic and I don't understand how somebody could do something like this especially in front of a kid," the nanny said.

At this point exactly what was taken from the home isn't clear, but the nanny said iPads and other electronics were left out in plain sight.
